I wish you were my neighbor, I would welcome you with open arms. I hate this too, I’m an American and the behavior of some of my fellow countrymen both angers me and breaks my heart. I’m so sick of hatred and stupidity, it’s embarrassing and so needless, mindless. This crap brings me to tears sometimes, and I don’t know what the answer is.

The USA seems to go through a cycle of isolationism and anti-immigrant feeling every 50-60 years or so. Three of my grandparents came over around 1900, when there was also substantial anti-immigration feelings. If they were alive today, I’d bet they have some choice stories about those days struggling in America with poor English skills. Their experiences were frustrating, but relatively mild (I suppose), since they were northern European and could “pass” as “Americans.” (Until their thick Swedish accents gave them away …)

Some of those early-20th century immigrants have progeny that now serve in Congress, a fact we should rub in the faces of any putz who tries to make immigration to the States even harder than it is now.

But here’s a more encouraging story. I was in my hometown airport (SDF) a couple of weeks ago. Standing in the check-in line with me were a tall Muslim man and his wife. She was wearing an abaya and he a white traditional brimless cap and long tunic over white pants. No one at the airport gave them a second look, and the TSA didn’t hassle them. Just another pair of travelers in a multi-ethnic nation.

That’s America.
